‘Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension’ Will Be The Last of the Franchise

In 2007, Paranormal Activity changed the found footage genre game. Originally developed as an independent feature and given film festival screenings in 2007, the film was acquired by Paramount Pictures and modified, particularly with a new ending. It was given a limited U.S. release on September 25, 2009, and then a nationwide release on October 16, 2009. The film earned nearly $108 million at the U.S. box office and a further $85 million internationally for a worldwide total of $193 million. Paramount/DreamWorks acquired the U.S. rights for $350,000. It is the most profitable film ever made, based on return on investment.

Later on, the film had sequels in 2010 (Paranormal Activity 2), 2011 (Paranormal Activity 3), 2012 (Paranormal Activity 4) and a spin-off film (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones). The franchise already earned a whopping $811,641,595 with a $18,015,000 budget. Although the critic response to the film is getting lower another sequel is on the way which will apparently be the last of the series.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension depicts the newest family to be visited by the demon Toby. The Fleeges – newcomer Chris J. Murray as Ryan, Brit Shaw (Nashville) as Emily, and Ivy George (Curse of Slender Man) as their daughter Leila – move into a new house where they discover (unsurprisingly) a video camera and tapes in the garage.

Series editor Gregory Plotkin directed The Ghost Dimension, which will focus on the Fleeges as they discover the paranormal activity surrounding them through the found camera’s lens. According to the film’s producers, the camera footage will be displayed in 3D, explaining why The Ghost Dimension is finally making the leap to the format.

USA TODAY has released for images of the film which you can see below:

Series producer Jason Blum discussed the fact that despite the ongoing success of the relatively low-budget series, The Ghost Dimension will conclude the franchise. As the final film, Blum said it will answer many questions about the demonic mythology that have arisen from previous installments, including what Toby actually looks like.

““It’s coming to an end. This is it, the finale. We’re saying it before the movie opens. We’re not going to grind this horror franchise into the ground. This will keep ‘Paranormal Activity’ as part of this culture and this particular time in a really fantastic way… We couldn’t go just teasing. All the questions that everyone has asked from the past ‘Paranormal Activity’ films: What does Toby look like? What’s the backstory to the families? These questions have been teased out. Now they will be answered.”

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension arrives in cinemas October 2015 distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.
