Don’t you just feel sad when your anticipated movie turned out to be bad?
We now discuss the disappointments in cinema this year:
TOMORROWLAND (Brad Bird). Knowing that Brad Bird directed Pixar’s The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, fans who knew the director’s filmography are excited with his new movie. But it turned out to be short on substance but more on visuals. Tomorrowland gets to bring George Clooney aboard but it didn’t help as the story gets more ridiculous as it ends.

FANTASTIC FOUR (Jose Trank). Before it was released, people lambasted the film because of its casting choices and some plot points reveal that it deviates its source material. And then it opened, the story was okay but was poorly created. It’s as if they were not trying to make a superhero film. No excitement, no impressive action sequences. It was all wrong for a superhero movie.

DARK PLACES (Gilles Pacquet-Brenner). The people behind Dark Places wanted to follow on the success of Gone Girl. Unfortunately, they can’t. The film itself tries to copy that, with its mysterious treatment. But everything in a film falls down to its story. Whether it is good or bad. Interesting enough or not. Whether how they adapt it to the big screen will be better than its source material. Dark Places was interesting but it doesn’t get to be entertaining.

THE GREEN INFERNO (Eli Roth). Eli Roth’s return to horror was greatly hyped over a year and when it arrived, all the excitements faded. The film is gory, yes, and it has some jaw-dropping moments but scary? Not that much. Eli Roth could’ve provided more depth to its characters as they were written experimentally, playing with each characters before they passed. Everything became ridiculous as they put twist after twist that it became tedious.

PAN (Joe Wright). Peter Pan origins was supposed to be fun, reckless, alive! This version doesn’t seem to get that, you’ll find it hard to stay awake and be attentive with each scenes as they were boring. Yes, the film was visually stunning, the 3D was also notable for its effectiveness but everything else was mediocre.

CRIMSON PEAK (Guillermo Del Toro). Boasts beautiful and grand production but the story fails to be as impressive as its looks. Guillermo Del Toro’s “passion project” feels lost in its production, while it delivered spine-chilling atmosphere and visuals through its ghosts, it wasn’t enough to make an impact until it ends.

KNOCK KNOCK (Eli Roth). It’s frustratingly engaging. The story works because the main character here which is played by Keanu Reeves is stupid. And you just wanna go on with the film because you’re interested on what happens next and how it ends even though it’s already getting in your nerves.

THE LAST WITCH HUNTER (Breck Eisner). It’s a solid B-movie action film. Though it has the potential to become a franchise, The Last Witch Hunter suffers from being too predictable and familiar as it copies from other movies without being fun. It tries to be though but everything feels superficial that you wouldn’t care enough to want it to be good.

BY THE SEA (Angelina Jolie). The bride and groom tandem of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is tested in this romantic drama that wants to be like the Before series. Though it has some enjoyable moments, the film’s ridiculous twist in the end feels unnecessary and makes everything feel unnatural.

SECRET IN THEIR EYES (Billy Ray). Putting Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman and Chiwetel Ejiofer in one movie makes one interested already but its slowly paced and unengaging main character makes it otherwise. Secret in their Eyes is a missed fire on the pile of foreign films that are being remade for the Hollywood audience.
