PATAY NA SI HESUS (2016) Review

A guy with a down syndrome who dances to Britney Spears hits, a lesbian who is madly in love with his partner, a guy who has no ambitions and is satisfied with what he has which is nothing and a woman who just lost her ex-husband. Combine these characters into one family and add a crazy nun, you’ll get a hilarious road trip movie with a heart.
Patay na si Hesus goes down as one of the funniest Filipino film in recent memory. It’s humor isn’t forced and the artists are all effective in delivering their lines. It isn’t a new take on a road trip movie, it also isn’t new to showcase a (dysfunctional) Filipino family. But the film is sincere in giving a story about individuals who are going through something and at the same time going to somewhere.
Jaclyn Jose may not have one Best Actress on its QCinema run in 2016, but there is joy, there is pain and there is anger in her character that is represented in a very Filipino way – we find happiness in every situation, we strive to have a better life amidst everything, personally or business-wise we are going through.
It’s fortunate to be included at the first Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino because a wider audience deserves to see the film. This is not your typical Filipino comedy film, it doesn’t have overly dramatic and comedic scenes, just entertainment, a fun story told in the most realistic way possible.
