“Insidious: The Last Key” Review: Just Another Trip to ‘The Further’

INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY (2018) Review
Directed by Adam Robitel

After a succession of horror films that have broken some records last year, 2018 opened with a mediocre sequel to a hit horror film franchise. Insidious: The Last Key may be the series’ last attempt in creating success out of James Wan’s first two films or their attempt to actually continue on with building The Further universe.

Is there more stories to tell about Elise Rainier? Perhaps. Is Insidious: The Last Key another story we would want or deserve to see? Maybe. After Insidious: Chapter 3 and knowing James Wan won’t return to direct this sequel, there isn’t much hope for this to actually be good or at least decent, and my fears were right.

The film, in terms of building the mood for scares is there, it’s creepy and the fear of something to surprise you through jump scares is there. But the story is just tired and uninspired that it goes to the further with predictability in it. You can actually see some of the scares coming even if you still fall for it. But with a talented star like Lin Shaye, her talents are used into something that feels more like a cash cow than a chance to create something worthwhile.

It’s not the best Insidious movie but it’s not as trying hard as Chapter 3. You’ll still experience scares along the way but this isn’t the Insidious movie that will leave a mark and will scare you in your sleep.
