“Tomb Raider” Review: A Decent Kick-Off to a Larger-Than-Life Franchise

TOMB RAIDER (2018) Review
Directed by Roar Uthaug

Fifteen years after the second Angelina Jolie – starrer Tomb Raider was released, we get a new a more action-packed adaptation starring Swedish actress Alicia Vikander. It’s not a total upgrade from its main star (sorry, Vikander) but the film is definitely a pleaser for action movie fans.

It was an unusual sight for an actress who’s more recognized in movies that most likely to get a nomination or an award in prestigious award giving bodies but Alicia Vikander in the newest Tomb Raider looks like she came to the party ready.

While I have no issues with Vikander in the starring role, her character isn’t quite as ready or as ripe as she is. Or maybe we were used to a Lara Croft that’s more than just her brains, that even her fighting skills are impressive wherever you put her. In here, she seems underwhelming.

But you know what? Tomb Raider is one of the most thrilling and action-packed female-led movie in recent memory. It’s a decent kick-off to a franchise that offers larger-than-life adventures. The film does not stop from offering deadly situations for our heroine that it feels tiring and draining but the energy is still there, the thrills are still there.
