“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” Review: Sentimental to a Fault

MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN (2018) Review
Directed by Ol Parker

It’s been ten (10) years since the first Mamma Mia! movie was released and just like ABBA’s music, it was one of my favorite feel-good movies to re-watch from time to time. And then a sequel was announced, so my heart was excited as hell to see Seryfried and Streep return to the big screen and sing their ABBA hearts out. But I was disappointed.

“The feel-good cinema event returns,” the film’s tagline says but it’s hard to feel good when the vibe of the film is actually sad. Yes, there are moments wherein you smile and laugh but you don’t get to feel the ups and downs of the story, it’s a constant average from start to finish.

I was excited to see extravagant musical numbers as well but the film also disappoints in that area. Seeing Amanda Seyfried, Lily James and all of the cast is fun, though. The star power is definitely there, you just don’t feel like they were showcased well.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again has a decent story. But as a feel-good musical, it needs to offer more than just the story. It needs to make its audience smile, sing, laugh and may be dance as well. There just aren’t a lot of magical moments like its predecessor and it’s a sad dilemma for a fan like me. It’s sentimental to its story that the fun isn’t as felt more as it should be.
