‘Captain Marvel’ Review: Not-Your-Ordinary Superhero Origin Story

CAPTAIN MARVEL (2019) Review
Directed by Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck

Higher, further, faster. Marvel Studios’ finally have its female-led superhero movie. They could have gone with a more popular character, but that name still belongs to 20th Century Fox. So, never mind. But nevertheless, it’s like how Marvel introduced us to Iron Man, or to Thor but as it is set in the 90s, it feels more like how Marvel introduced us to Captain America.

So, here we are now. Brie Larson as Captain Marvel. One of the strongest and indestructible superhero in Marvel comics. But did the film actually made an impact? For me, it did. Not as big as Wonder Woman but there’s a moment when I actually went “wow!” on my seat, realizing how different and relevant Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel story was.

Why “not-your-ordinary superhero origin story”? Without giving any spoilers, the film didn’t start on how Carol Danvers become Captain Marvel. It’s like learning how to swim by being thrown into the water, it’s uncomfortable at first since I have no idea who Captain Marvel or Carol Danvers is. Thankfully, even though there are plenty to absorb in the first act, everything was told smoothly.

Captain Marvel is how Marvel celebrates their characters through films: entertainment from start to finish. Even though it’s unlike the first Marvel superhero origins, the formula is still there. It’s fun, action-packed and makes sure it’s a story worth telling.

Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel may ba short in giving inspiration to its viewers but it’s definitely not short in giving its audience a time worth spending. Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson is fun to watch and these new characters played by impressive actors are worth noting, too. Marvel continues to not disappoint.
