#MMFF2019 ‘3pol Trobol: Huli Ka Balbon’ Review: Explosive Action Scenes, Explosive Surprises

3POL TROBOL: HULI KA BALBON (2019) Review
Directed by Rodel Nacianceno

When we say Coco Martin, we always think of the action genre. Whether it is on TV or on the big screen, the guy is this generation’s King of Action Movies. So, for everyone to expect his newest movie 3pol Trobol: Huli Ka Balbon to be action-packed is not surprising. And they will not be disappointed.

The film is Rodel or Coco’s second film as a director, his first, Ang Panday, was one of the favorites of the 2017 edition of the Metro Manila Film Festival, and it was a fun fantasy adventure film. This year, Coco does action and comedy with two of the biggest names in the industry, Jennylyn Mercado and Aiai delas Alas.

I was one of the few lucky to be invited at the advanced VIP screening of the MMFF entry. Though at first I thought the film wouldn’t be offering something new, but I was wrong.

3pol Trobol: Huli Ka Balbon packs explosive action scenes and explosive surprises. Whether Coco is the security officer Pol firing guns, jumping from explosions or the vivacious Paloma teasing and seducing and also doing fight scenes, the film never has dull moments. He’s like FPJ as Pol and Dolphy as Paloma. There’s enough fun, tension and surprising moments for the whole family to enjoy. It’s like Coco Martin is destined to be in the MMFF whether an actor or as a director, he knows the formula for an entertaining film that does not affect the quality of the story.

Now, about Coco’s chemistry with Jennylyn Mercado? It feels as though this isn’t the first or second time the two have worked with each other. You can see how comfortable they are in every scene. And not only Coco has explosive surprises here, but also Jennylyn. You have to watch the movie to see what she going to do for the first time, I think? Either way, I was surprised by the turn of events for her character.

Aiai delas Alas and her brand of comedy is used in the film. It’s that motherly care that goes way beyond the usual and it works for the dynamics of the story and the characters. Sam Milby, Tirso Cruz III, Edu Manzano and Rowell Santiago also gave notable performances here.

Overall, 3pol Trobol: Huli Ka Balbon is a fairly made action comedy movie for all ages. Yes, there is violence but the action scenes are quite interesting because it’s tiring and it manages to mix the comedy well. It could have been more smooth visually and maybe add more tender scenes to make it an even more complete moviegoing experience.
