Timothee Chalamet is Willy Wonka in new origin story film

In a report from Deadline, Dune and Call Me By Your Name star Timothee Chalamet is confirmed to play the role of Willy Wonka in a new origin story from Warner Bros. and The Roald Dahl Story Co.

Sources also told Deadline that Wonka will mark the first time Chalamet gets to show off his singing and dancing skills with several musical numbers set to appear in the film. He’s been the top choice for some time but scheduling was a hurdle that had to be overcome as training for those numbers is included in the prep for this film.

Paddington director Paul King will helm the film from the screenplay wrote by Simon Farnaby which also wrote King’s Paddington 2.

This is the third Willy Wonka story after Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971), and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp previously portrayed the famous owner of Wonka chocolate bars.

The family adventure film Wonka is slated to arrive in cinemas in March 2023.
