MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 (2016) Review
Directed by Kirk Jones
14 years ago, the life of Toula Portakalos (Nia Vardalos) changed when she met the man that will change her life forever. Now, still being Greek and having a daughter that’s about to attend her prom and plan her college life, with her parents finding out that they’re not actually married so they are going to get married but in a big way and she and her husband, Ian Miller (John Corbett) are trying to rekindle their marriage’s romance, comes My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.
Everything in the film is a lot to handle that it loses its focus and it all turned into a circus. But the film clearly has a heart to turn to whenever it falls apart. Its charms are the usual but still convenient. You get the loud but thoughtful family and the extensions of their family, you get the troubled daughter who thinks she knows what she wants but in the end will be thankful for everything. The film is clearly standard quality for sequels nowadays and you might think that it’s unnecessary.
The people behind the film might just be joining the bandwagon of sequels and making franchises out of something beloved. And we get My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. Their intentions are clear and we get something we can appreciate but would rather not have it. You can enjoy the film for its charms and typical laughs and heartfelt moments for family that we Filipinos are suckers for but the whole film was as messy as the Portakalos family.
