The Mermaid is currently making waves as China’s biggest blockbuster to date with box office sales surpassing the half billion dollar mark. It is the first movie to ever do so in mainland China and in Hong Kong, and has even outperformed Hollywood heavy weights like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Furious 7, Avatar and Jurassic World.
On May 11, this monumental film is coming exclusively to Megaworld Lifestyle Malls which will screen the film in Mandarin with English subtitles across the cinemas of Newport Mall, Lucky Chinatown and Uptown Mall.
The Mermaid is a genre cross over with elements of drama, comedy, romance and fantasy with a heavy dose of special effects. In the film, newcomer actress Jelly Lin Yun plays a mermaid sent to seduce and assassinate a rich businessman played by Chinese star Deng Chao whose development project puts her habitat and her people at risk.
Directed and written by iconic Hong Kong star Stephen Chow, who also worked behind and in front of the camera for other blockbusters like Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, the Mermaid employs Chow’s winning formula of mixing riotous comedy with heartwarming charm.
Apart from its mass appeal, The Mermaid also features a social commentary that highlights important issues facing the environment and Chinese politics that even Filipinos will find relatable.
Tickets to The Mermaid will be available at Megaworld Cinema ticketing booths and at www.blockbusterseats.com, which is Megaworld Lifestyle Malls newly launched online ticketing network.
