MOVIE REVIEW: The Super Parental Guardians (2016)

Directed by Bb. Joyce Bernal

Vice Ganda and Coco Martin already proved their box-office tandem as a success, but can that success be replicated in their second film? Obviously, yes. Star Cinema has proven their capacity in marketing Vice Ganda films as the film to see when it comes out. Now that their director is Bb. Joyce Bernal, is their kind of comedy going to change? Will the film be good as advertised?

In terms of the quality of the film, it’s disappointing that from Beauty and the Bestie which is decent, they’ve come back to somewhere almost The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin, which was awful. The Super Parental Guardians doesn’t try to offer something new to the audience, it just gives the tried (and tired) and tested jokes and formula in a story which in the end, won’t matter.

It is funny at times, of course, Vice Ganda and the writers can come up with something funny in a situation or crack timely jokes every now and then. But some of the jokes are predictable and overused that it doesn’t crack you up, some are kind of insulting which is Vice Ganda’s brand of comedy. The whole film feels like it is having a hard time trying to be a Wenn Deramas film, having to take on the director’s job, Bernal can definitely do comedy films, but gone are the days that her brand of craziness (Super B, Booba) can be showcased in her works.

It’s extravagant, a level up in their past work in terms of visual presentation. But it’s predictable, the story feels hardly different from their previous film and it resorts to impossible theatrics in its narrative just to have the intention to entertain the family  (through imposing trending games such as Pokemon Go) without even having a logic behind it.
