“Ready Player One” Review: A Bundle of Pop Culture Joy

READY PLAYER ONE (2018) Review
Directed by Steven Spielberg

It has been a while since Steven Spielberg did something for the geeks. And with Ready Player One, he did not disappoint.

Just in the trailer, the film has The Iron Giant, the car from Back to the Future, and I think there’s also Ryu and Chun-Li from Street Fighter, Ready Player One is invested in making its audience feel nostalgic and with experiencing the whole film, it keeps you feel warm with referencing pop culture characters and items that will bring you to familiar times.

The film is not just for those who knows these characters though. As it builds its story with its main lead Wade Watts played by Tye Sheridan. It’s an adventure too big for the real world as the film’s tagline says, but it’s true. The adventure, the scope of the film whether it’s in the Oasis or in the real world, it’s big.

It’s political, it has a love angle, it’s a sci-fi, action, a movie about friendship, it covers about everything!

But the best thing about the film is that you get to enjoy the ride as an audience as well. It boasts an effective character-driven story that will easily make you root for his goals in the Oasis and in real life. Ready Player One is a bundle of pop culture joy that is just a pleasure to watch from start to finish.
