‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Review: A bigger, better, mature sequel

SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS (2023) Review
Directed by David F. Sandberg

Usually, you tend to feel the shift of treatment in sequels. It feels bigger, it feels like the production has more confidence. Or in short, it has a bigger budget. While I can also say the same thing to Shazam! Fury of the Gods, what I noticed more is how consistent it is with its predecessor in terms of character development. It definitely is bigger than the first one but you can also say that it is also mature when it deals with the characters’ present dilemmas.

It’s still the Shazam! we love. The innocence of a teenage boy in a body of a superhero, the humor, the adventure but with a villain that has more tenacity. And well-realized characters created more impact on the emotional and visual journey of the film.

It’s fun to watch. Rachel Zeigler steals the show while Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren prove that they deserve to challenge the wit and strength of Shazam. Director David F. Sandberg isn’t afraid to go a little to far in terms of scare and that made this sequel bigger and better.

3.5 OUT OF 5 STARS
