SECRET IN THEIR EYES (2015) Review
Directed by Billy Ray

Though with strong performances, Secret in Their Eyes fails in making a compelling film that’s dragged down by its inability to create an effective storytelling with its narrative. The film revolves around three characters, mostly with Ray (Ejiofor), but with Jess (Roberts) having a more interesting character journey, the film diverts its heavy content and leaves it for a thrilling piece but you’d feel there’s something missing.

Doing a remake is always a tricky job for those involved. But sticking with its characters motives will always be the best way to do it. Though haven’t seen the original, this one’s a bit of a let down. There’s too much depth and anger in Jess but it wasn’t juiced enough on screen. The film spends more time on the outside of the more sensitive, more interesting story that it ends in a disappointing turn.

Having these great actors already makes the film interesting but its outcome will be on how the director uses them. Secret in Their Eyes could’ve been more compelling if it balances its characters better. It lashes out its potential of being compelling by offering an ineffective narrative and tedious drama.
