“A Once-In-A-Lifetime Experience”: Cast Expresses Excitement for West Philippine Sea Military Thriller ‘Ang Mamatay Nang Dahil Sa’yo’

As tensions in the West Philippine Sea remain a pressing national issue, a new military drama is set to bring the stories of the soldiers on the frontlines to the big screen. Helmed by director Philip King (Elevator, G! LU!) and produced by Cesar Soriano of GreatCzar Productions, Ang Mamatay Nang Dahil Sa’yo is an upcoming fictional film inspired by real events. The movie spotlights the sacrifices of Philippine Marines guarding the country’s maritime territory aboard the rusting, grounded vessel BRP Sierra Madre at Ayungin Shoal.

Producer Cesar Soriano emphasized the urgency and intention behind bringing this narrative to audiences. “This film is very timely because in the past few days we have witnessed or we have seen what has been happening in the West Philippine Sea with our soldiers having an altercation with the Chinese soldiers. This event has really triggered a lot of misconceptions, there are a lot of alarming moves that we all in the Philippines should be aware of. And this is why, as a former journalist, I want show the sacrifices of our soldiers guarding our islands, protecting what is ours and what they are contributing to our country. With this film, we would like to let the Filipino people know that our islands and seas are guarded. And with our government’s stand, hindi pwedeng maibigay kahit isang inch ng ating territory. And the message of this movie is we want to promote patriotism on our people,” Soriano shares.

Director Philip King added that the project arrives at a significant juncture in Philippine history. “It’s significant now because it’s the 10th anniversary of the arbitration. So, we won that and then a decade later parang nothing has changed, some of us moved on, walang nag-iba. But the film wants to present those men who stayed to serve and protect us. They stayed there on that boat for six months na sila-sila lang ang magkakasama at tayo umaasa sa kanila. So, this is their story,” King explains.

The film follows four Philippine Marines on the remote BRP Sierra Madre, grounded at Ayungin Shoal, as they begin a routine six-month deployment. Cut off from their families and surrounded by uncertainty, they spend their days repairing a rusting ship, standing watch over contested waters, and finding small moments of laughter amid the endless isolation. Leading them is David Delgado, played by McCoy de Leon, a disciplined young officer determined to keep his men safe. Alongside him are Diego Jacinto, played by Mon Confiado, a veteran Marine who has witnessed decades of conflict in the region, and Jerome Chavez, played by Polo Laurel, a spirited young Marine whose optimism and love for the sea slowly challenge the walls David has built around himself.

As tensions continue to rise, the men discover that their greatest battles are not always fought against an enemy beyond the horizon, but within themselves. Bound by duty and tested by hardship, they forge an unlikely brotherhood aboard a ship that has become both their home and the nation’s enduring symbol of resilience. The feature project brings together a strong ensemble cast, leading with McCoy de Leon, Mon Confiado, Polo Laurel, Gold Aceron, and Arron Villaflor, alongside Mark Neumann, JR Velasco, Chris Leonardo, and Yves Flores.

While the production team is actively scouting locations, the possibility of filming on or near the actual BRP Sierra Madre is currently under discussion with official military channels. “Wala pang location, but we’re looking at two spots,” director Philip King answers. Producer Cesar Soriano adds, “We have efforts to ask the support of our government, the military, so we can really have a meaningful film. Initially, we have discussed going to the BRP Sierra Madre, but of course, subject to some regulations from the Armed Forces of the Philippines and other agencies, but may initial na okay naman, but there are things that we have to follow.”

The cast members expressed profound enthusiasm about the prospect of stepping onto the actual BRP Sierra Madre for filming or immersion.

Mon Confiado noted, “As actors, very interesting ‘yung gagawin namin.

Arron Villaflor echoed the sentiment, stating, “Tama ‘yung sinasabi nila direk na ‘once in a lifetime experience’ ito. Kung ma-experience namin ito, it’s going to be a beautiful experience for everyone and feeling the atmosphere, kapag nandoon ka na, nai-imagine namin parang, pinag-uusapan sa telebisyon, pinag-uusapan sa radyo, parang kapag nandoon ka, parang ‘grabe, ang sarap nito,’ parang nakaka-proud bilang Pilipino to the point and the fact na we’re protecting and fighting for this spot for a long time already. So, it’s going to be a fun experience, memorable experience.”

Gold Aceron added, “Siyempre excited akong maka-work sila. Polo Laurel agreed, stating, “It’s a big yes for me. So, it will be an honor for me.”

No release date has been announced yet, but they are definitely looking at a cinema release.
