National Geographic Reveals Trailer for Lion – An Epic Four-Part Event Series That Follows a Cub’s Extraordinary Journey to Become a King

National Geographic has officially unveiled the trailer for LION, a sweeping four-part event series that chronicles the remarkable real-life journey of a tiny lion cub named Kio as he grows into a king. Filmed over four years in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, the ambitious project marks the first natural history production ever to document a lion’s complete life path from vulnerable youth to absolute ruler.

Executive produced by Disney Legend Jon Favreau and BBC Studios Natural History Unit’s Mike Gunton, the series fuses blockbuster storytelling techniques with authentic documentary footage to deliver a gripping saga of family, courage, and survival. All four episodes will premiere streaming exclusively on Disney+ on August 20.

Narrated by O.J. Lynch, famed for playing Mufasa in the stage production of The Lion King, the production represents an unprecedented technical achievement. A dedicated crew, including local Kenyan filmmakers, logged nearly 1,400 filming days across 52 separate shoots—the most field time ever spent following a single pride.

The emotional weight of Kio’s coming-of-age journey is further elevated by a powerful score led by legendary Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer, working alongside Niccolò Pacella and George Huston Warren for Bleeding Fingers Music. Featuring vocals from the Nairobi Chamber Chorus, the soundtrack blends authentic field recordings of local instruments and wild lion roars with subtle, re-recorded musical nods to The Lion King. The official soundtrack album will release via Hollywood Records on August 21.

Beyond screen entertainment, the debut of LION reinforces Disney’s ongoing “Protect the Pride” campaign in partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund. Aiming to double the wild lion population by 2050, Disney has already invested over $5 million into conservation projects across 26 countries.

By showcasing Kio’s high-stakes reality, the series aims to captivate audiences of all ages while driving real-world support for protecting Africa’s wild lion populations for generations to come.
