MOVIE REVIEW: Nine Lives (2016)

NINE LIVES (2016) Review
Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld

A family movie that aims to melt the hearts of its viewers through the old plot, “you’ll-end-up-having-no-family-if-you-don’t-make-time-for-them.” But the twist in Nine Lives, Tom Brand (Kevin Spacey) turns into a cat by someone who he bought a cat from for his daughter, a moment where he tries to be a better parent. Unfortunately, fate has a better plan for him.

Kevin Spacey is joined by Jennifer Garner as his second wife, his eldest son portrayed by Robbie Amell from his first wife and this youngest, a lovely daughter played by Malina Weissman. To make it short, Nine Lives is bland. Not the story though, it can be treated with enthusiasm by all means but how they approached the film felt dull. You know, you wish it feels as fun as it looks but it isn’t? And it’s disappointing because they have a talented cast and maybe a decent story. Director Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black Trilogy) might have lost his touch or this isn’t something he’s into. While there’s a heart to its story, there’s no passion presented by its characters, if there is, it isn’t as strong as it should be.

Nine Lives could pass as an entertaining family film but one that is forgettable the moment you get home. There’s isn’t much to discuss about the film either because it’s common, there’s nothing new.
