LOVE YOU TO THE STARS AND BACK (2017) Review
Directed by Antoinette Jadaone
After their successful debut film as a love team in Vince and Kath and James, Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto prove they have more to offer in their latest film Love You to the Stars and Back.
The film plays like what most of us call destiny. Mika (Julia Barretto) who wants to be with her deceased mother, went on a road trip to be abducted by “aliens,” while Caloy, making himself complete before everything else fades as he is diagnosed with cancer. As serendipitous as it may sound, the two found what they were looking for in each other.
Love You to the Stars and Back is a deeply emotional film that is balanced well with the charms of its lead cast. You can feel the baggage of Mika and Caloy from start to finish and yet, you can still feel them experience life. The camera loves Joshua Garcia, but the guy doesn’t just have a pretty face but also a very expressive eyes. Every time he jokes, it’s adorable, every time he cries, it’s heartbreaking. Garcia clearly has versatility in his acting, you’re just going to watch him and admit to yourself that this guy is so damn good.
But Barretto also gave her best performance in the big screen so far. Playing Mika who believes in aliens, and everything else, wearing a different look, gives her role justice. There is enough youthful charm and rebelism in her character that it’s appropriate for her age that makes us relate to her more.
Love You to the Stars and Back is my favorite Anotinette Jadaone film yet. It bested That Thing Called Tadhana for offering characters that are lovable but also gives you all the reasons to sympathize with them. The family element in the film isn’t forced like most Filipino mainstream films and that’s refreshing. It just tells the story of two young individuals going through something heavy and they want the pain to be stripped from them..
It is a moving film that tackles life, the choices we do for the people we love and aliens. Love You to the Stars and Back is a beautiful and emotional film, and Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto are just two of the many reasons to love the movie.
