“The Hows of Us” Review: The Relationships that are Worth Saving

THE HOWS OF US (2018) Review
Directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina

Director Cathy Garcia-Molina with Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla manage to present a story that tackles relationships in a very Filipino way, that there’s something the film offers every person who loved can relate to.

The film tells the story of Primo and George – two young sweethearts who planned their futures together. But career, life and love doesn’t seem to correlate with each other that sometimes, one has to sacrifice for the other, or one has to be the more understanding because of love. But in life, love can never be enough.

Let’s start with how the film is not just a Daniel Padilla movie, or a Kathryn Bernardo movie, wherein only one of the two shines. This is Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla in their most mature role, not pertaining to how more they can show but how well they can act, together. The two shines equally and the two have grown so much as artists from their first movie back in 2012.

The story, though satisfyingly decent, also feels familiar with other Filipino romance movies. But what makes it special is how it presents the difficulty in being in a one-way relationship. At one point, we’ve experienced that stage in our lives that all we do is give but it feels as though nothing is being returned. The film gets that heartbreaking experience.

The Hows of Us has all the elements you expect and want from a Filipino romance movie. It’s meant to be your go-to movie for characters and story you can relate to, you can cry to, nothing more, nothing less. I just wish they’ve risked more, especially with what the two stars have become as actors now.
