As the saying goes, “Variety is the spice of life” and this does not exempt versatile actor Robert De Niro who headlines the new action-comedy film “The Comeback Trail”.
Director George Gallo shares that the legendary actor, revered for his searing screen portrayals of gangsters and other intense characters, immediately signed on to portray embattled film producer Max Barber.
“Robert De Niro and I got into a discussion of him wanting to do something funny after he had played a dark character in ‘The Irishman’ and the movie came together from there,” says Gallo.
“The Comeback Trail” is Gallos’ second collaboration with De Niro since “Midnight Run” (1988).
In “The Comeback Trail”, two movie producers (Robert De Niro and Zach Braff) who owe money to the mob (Morgan Freeman) set up their aging movie star Duke Montana (Tommy Lee Jones) for an insurance scam to try to save themselves. The plan is simple: “accidentally” kill Montana during a stunt and then collect the insurance money.
The big hitch in the plan, however, is that Montana can’t seem to die.
“My hope is that this film simply makes people laugh. We presently find ourselves in dark uncertain times. Laughter is a good thing,” says Gallo.
For this hilarious movie, he tapped Hollywood screen legends who are also Oscar winners—Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones, and Morgan Freeman—to lead the star-studded cast. Other cast members include Zach Braff (TV’s Scrubs), Emile Hirsch (Once Upon A Time in Hollywood), Eddie Griffin (Undercover Brother), and Kate Katzman (This Is The Year).
Gallo directed from a script he wrote with Josh Posner in a remake of Harry Hurwitz’s 1982 film of the same name. “The idea of heavily insuring an actor hoping he would die in a dangerous stunt was something of pure comic genius,” Gallo recalls.
Gallo is no stranger to the action-comedy genre, having written the story for one of the biggest action comedies of all time, “Bad Boys” (1994). With “The Comeback Trail”, Gallo helms a different kind of action-comedy as the film satirizes the shady C-list Hollywood filmmakers in the early 1970’s.
“The Comeback Trail” is currently one of the highly anticipated, must-watch movies this season in North America, and has picked up promising pre-release buzz, headlining the Aspen Film Festival and Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival. Its trailer (https://youtu.be/ZgafjiUOonI) has already gotten some 3 million views on the Cloudburst Entertainment Youtube channel.
Coming soon to Philippine cinemas, “The Comeback Trail” is produced by Storyboard Media and distributed by Cloudburst Entertainment in the US and TBA Studios in the Philippines.
