Beyond the Jokes: Why Working With Jerald Napoles and Pepe Herrera is both a Breeze and a Challenge in ‘Ang Pinakamasarap na Pares sa Balat ng Lupa’

For comedy powerhouses Jerald Napoles and Pepe Herrera, making director Raynier F. Brizuela’s Ang Pinakamasarap na Pares sa Balat ng Lupa was equal parts effortless masterclass and high-stakes balancing act. The film follows Don (Herrera)—a dramatic guy told he has 24 hours to live—and his ride-or-die best friend Mola (Napoles) on a chaotic road trip to find a legendary bowl of pares, all while dodging a corrupt doctor targeting Don’t healthy liver. Bringing this high-concept road comedy to life revealed why working with two comedy heavyweights cuts both ways.

Where It Was Easy

The process was effortless largely because of built-in trust and a shared work ethic. Napoles dismissed any idea that working with top-tier talent creates friction, sharing, “Walang mahirap kasi siguro naunahan ng excitement, personally… Hindi ko na maiisip kung ano bang pwedeng mangyaring pangit o hindi maganda, kasi naniniwala akong automatic magiging maganda ‘yung pagtatrabaho.”

Director Raynier F. Brizuela credited their background as grounded actors rather than mere gag performers, pointing out that “hindi ninyo talaga kino-consider ‘yung mga sarili ninyo na komedyante. Mga actors sila na nagkataon nakatanggap ng mga proyektong comedy.” This natural mastery allowed for constant, respectful improvisation on set. Brizuela noted that whenever a scene felt off, the actors stepped up naturally: “…kusa na si Pepe at si Jerald na magbibigay ng kanilang suggestion… open talaga for improvisation as long as ang service ay to the story.” Crucially, they always checked in before ad-libbing, keeping the work relationship healthy and aligned.

Where It Was Difficult

The friction didn’t come from ego, but from high standards and logistics. Brizuela admitted to feeling the pressure of matching his leads’ standards, admitting, “Siyempre, siguro ‘yung iba nai-intimidate sa kanila dahil sa kanilang husay… Sa part na mahirap, may ganung pressure… na hopefully napapantayan ‘yung comedy nila at comedy ko.”

For Herrera, the difficulty wasn’t artistic, but practical—specifically, running out of time when creative sparks flew. “Ang naiisip ko lang na mahirap ‘yung kunwari, kulang na sa oras tapos may gusto pa kayong gawin sa eksena, mga technical matters lang naman,” Herrera explained. “Siyempre, you don’t complain, you make do what you have.”

Ultimately, Ang Pinakamasarap na Pares sa Balat ng Lupa uses its 24-hour countdown structure to showcase why Napoles and Herrera work so well together: turning set pressure into an effortless celebration of friendship on and off the screen.

Following the success of their respective blockbuster movies Love, Ngo and Home Along Da Riles: Da Reunion, Comedy Box Office Lodis Jerald Napoles and Pepe Herrera star in director Raynier F. Brizuela’s newest comedy, Ang Pinakamasarap na Pares sa Balat ng Lupa. The two bring their trademark wit and charisma to a fun-filled story where friendship, food, and chaos collide. Opening in cinemas nationwide on August 26, 2026.

Herrera stars as Don, whose sudden illness comes with an even bigger shock: he’s told he has only 24 hours left to live. Dramatic and quick to panic, Don sets out to fulfill one final wish—to taste the most delicious pares on Earth featured in a viral vlog, the same dish his late grandmother once loved.

Joining him is his loyal and “ride-or-die” best friend Mola, played by Napoles, a street-smart quick thinker whose clever plans often backfire. Together, they set off in search of the legendary pares.

Along the way, their simple food trip spirals into one misadventure after another, leading them to unexpected places and more trouble than they bargained for. But while they’re busy chasing the ultimate pares experience, a corrupt doctor is hot on their trail, determined to get his hands on Don’s perfectly healthy liver.

As danger, surprises, and laughs keep piling up, Don and Mola’s friendship will be put to the test during the craziest 24 hours of their lives. Will they make it to the legendary bowl of pares before time and their pursuers catch up with them?

Joining the film is content creator-actor Yanyan De Jesus as Evans, Mola’s trusted helper at the paresan, whose playful antics add to the fun of Don and Mola’s adventure. Actress Christine Bermas stars as Molly, the woman who captures Mola’s heart. As they join Don and Mola’s quest for the greatest pares, Evans and Molly find themselves in a playful rivalry for Mola’s affection. Meanwhile, Gene Padilla is in full comic villain mode as the eccentric and greedy Doc Thor, whose relentless pursuit of Don’s liver sends the pair into a whirlwind of hilarious mishaps.

Rounding out the cast are comedians TJ Valderrama, Kedebon Colim, Jobelyn Manuel, James Caraan and Nonong Ballinan, each bringing their own comedic flair to the film’s colorful ensemble. Audiences can also look forward to a special guest appearance along the way.

Packed with hilarious twists and heartfelt moments, Ang Pinakamasarap na Pares sa Balat ng Lupa is ultimately a celebration of friendship, proving that the best partner you’ll ever have isn’t just the perfect bowl of pares, but the friend who will never leave your side.
