Dr. Seuss’s timeless agent of chaos is officially making his animated theatrical feature film debut. For co-directors Erica Rivinoja and Alessandro Carloni, bringing The Cat in the Hat to life was a deeply personal labor of love.
A Lifelong Connection to Chaos
Rivinoja—whose impressive writing credits include Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, Trolls, and South Park—grew up adoring the original book. When Warner Bros. Pictures Animation approached her about directing, she jumped at the chance.
“I really wanted to make sure that when we were doing this movie, we kept what everybody loves about the book—the Cat in the Hat, his chaos making, and the fun the children have,” Rivinoja shares.
Co-director Alessandro Carloni discovered the book as an early teen while learning English. Beyond helping him learn the language, the character held a special place in his heart, reminding him of his hardworking father who would come home late and bring joy through playful absurdity.

Expanding the Seuss Universe
The new film takes the classic story to unprecedented heights, introducing fresh elements to the beloved lore:
- An Army of Things: Move over Thing 1 and Thing 2! The film introduces hundreds of their wild peers hailing from a crazy land, turning the chaos up to eleven.
- The Cat’s Secret Job: Ever wonder what happens after the Cat leaves the house? The film reveals that causing mischief is actually his professional day job. He reports back to the I.I.I.I. (Institute for the Institution of Imagination and Inspiration, LLC) to help kids who are bored on rainy days or facing a special moment of need.
- High-Stakes Mission: Voiced by Bill Hader, the Cat takes on his toughest assignment yet: cheering up siblings Gabby and Sebastian as they struggle with moving to a new town. If he goes too far, it might be his last chance to prove himself—or lose his magical hat!
A Message for All Generations
Rivinoja and Carloni hope the film bridges generational gaps, offering nostalgia for parents and grandparents while reminding today’s screen-heavy generation that it is okay to make a mess, be silly, and live in the moment.
