April 20, 2018 – Lav Diaz’s latest masterpiece “Ang Panahon ng Halimaw” premiered at UP Cine Adarna, UP Diliman, Quezon City. While its big stars and director wasn’t present at the event, some of the cast and crew were there to take part of the question and answer portion after the screening.

Dubbed as a “Filipino Rock Opera,” Ang Panahon ng Halimaw (Season of the Devil) tells the story of a gang of militias in the late 1970s, under the control of the military, terrorizes a remote village in the Philippines.The terror being inflicted on the populace is not just corporal but intensely psychological as well. They were constantly fed with apocryphal tales about the village leader. A few souls are not giving up. They are fighting. The poet/teacher/activist, Hugo Haniway, decides to find out the truth about the disappearance of his wife. A love story set in the darkest period of Philippine history, the Marcos Dictatorship. The narrative and the characters are a composite of real events and real people that happened and existed during the period.
The film was selected to compete for the Golden Bear in the main competition section at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival. It was also part of the Hong Kong IFF, Festival Interncional de Cine UNAM (FICUNAM, Mexico), Festival Internacional de Cine de Cartagena de Indias (FICCI, Columbia) which itwon Best Film and at the Vilnius IFF and Bildrausch Filmfest Basel.

“Ang Panahon ng Halimaw” is set to be screened at select Ayala Malls Cinemas starting May 23.
