‘Mary Poppins Returns’ Review: Charming & Lovely but Short on Magic

MARY POPPINS RETURNS (2018) Review
Directed by Rob Marshall

Is it as supercalifragilisticexpialidocious as its predecessor? Not quite, but Mary Poppins Returns is a welcome family musical that still manages to put fun and music into the movies which is perfect for the holidays. But it’s quite short on magic and feels like it was made as a stage musical rather than for the big screen.

But with Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Wishaw, Emily Mortimer, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep on board, what can go wrong?

Mary Poppins Returns is heartwarming, charming and lovely. What made it special is its ability to find themes that are relateable, it manages to feel fresh even if it’s too familiar. It may be a safe installment of a beloved classic, but it is still a celebration of music, of family and of life.
