Teatro Meron’s ‘Ang Medea’ is a deeply engrossing and powerful stage adaptation

A performer in a dramatic black costume with a golden crown, passionately expressing emotions on stage, with flowing red fabric and a dynamic light backdrop.

Even with the little space, less than 10 actors and a running time of 1 hour and 40 minutes – a bit shorter than most of the theater plays I’ve seen recently, Ang Medea gets to be a deeply engrossing and powerful theater experience.

I was adjusting at first. With the language, its story, and its treatment, you’ll find yourself adapting to the world the show presents. And that’s okay because it gives the audience the time to appreciate the nuance and boldness of Teatro Meron’s interpretation of Medea. The production doesn’t shy away from the brutality of the original tragedy but infuses it with a distinct Filipino sensibility. By the time the final, shattering moments arrive, you realize that the initial feeling of adjustment was simply the process of being completely drawn into a world that is both ancient and startlingly immediate. The show is a brave, successful attempt to breathe new life into a classic text.

I was wondering if I know the story of Ang Medea and as the story progresses, it becomes familiar, but at the same time, I’m wanting more, anticipating what’s going to happen next and being captivated by the performances of the actors.

I was blown away by Miren Alvarez-Fabregas’ performance. Her voice, her diction, and her acting are worthy enough of the ticket price. And the ensemble made sure that their performance would mark. The success of the show was definitely a collective effort and it shows. From the actors to the director and everyone in the crew made this little show emotionally big.
