‘Shake Rattle & Roll: Evil Origins’ – A cinematic horror journey across past, present & future

“With Evil Origins, we bring you a cinematic journey across past, present and future, introducing a new cycle of evil that will terrorize generations,” Regal Entertainment Inc.’s Executive Vice President Keith Monteverde’s opening remarks at the grand media conference of ‘Shake Rattle & Roll: Evil Origins.’

It was one of the grandest media conferences I’ve attended; it felt like a trade launch. Regal Entertainment’s Keith Monteverde and Roselle Monteverde are in attendance to present the newest installment of the biggest horror franchise in the Philippines.

“This year, we’re trying to do something new with Shake Rattle & Roll, but at the same time, we’re still honoring the generations-long legacy of the franchise. And to do that, we’re going to present you stories that are different, yet connected. And to that, kailangan namin dalhin ‘yung story across past, present and future, and we’re very glad we have the best writers in the Philippine industry now,” JP Abellera, Regal Entertainment Inc. head of creative content and strategist shares.

‘SRR: Evil Origins’ is written by Noreen Capili (1775), Onay Sales (2025) and Gina Marissa Tagasa (2050).

“Our challenge as creators and writers is how to create fear na hindi nagsisigawan kasi ang characters are nuns. We want to create fear that slowly and quietly creeps in. While writing, mapapatanong ka din, kung ‘yung simbahan pinasok na ng demonyo, ng kasamaan, ng kadiliman, saan ka kakapit? If prayers, your religion and your faith are not enough to save you, ano pa ang tatakbuhan mo?,” Noreen Capili shares on writing episode 1775.

“From episode one na sobrang tahimik, ‘yung episode two ay very now, very young at very maingay kasi set siya sa isang party place sa present time. Eto na ‘yung Gen Z story. As one of the writers, ang challenge sa amin nung sinusulat siya ay ‘yung fact na multi-character siya. So, kailangang ilabas ‘yung uniqueness ng kada character, kailangan makita siya in just a short time kasi ⅓ lang siya ng film. Makikita ninyo ‘yung kanya kanya nilang strength kung paano nila natalo ‘yung evil entity kahit na magkakaibang tao sila or di sila magkakasundo, kailangan nilang mag-work together,” Onay Sales on challenges of writing episode 2025.

“Imagine this, the Philippines, our nation, is in total devastation. There’s drought, there’s hunger and we are overrun by flesh-eating creatures, we call them aswang – ito ‘yung bagong breed ng aswang. No other nation helped us; we faced them alone. So hope lies in family ties and faith. Dito magra-rise ang isang matinding family and they will rise above this chaos and lahat ng ito, manggagaling sa strong faith kay God. Episode 3 connects 1775 and 2025, then everything will make sense. We’re excited for you to watch this movie, kasi iba talagang horror experience ito,” Gina Marissa Tagasa on what episode 2050 is all about.

“Sa totoo lang, mahirap talaga mag-isip ng konsepto, makabuo ng isang Shake Rattle & Roll. Ngayong taon na ‘to, sinimulan naming buuin ito, I guess I could say, two years ago. So, from brainstorming, napag-usapan namin ang takbo ng Shake, eto na nga – ang past, present and future. Ano pa ba ang pwede nating maibigay para maiba ang Shake? Gawin nating connected. So, ito ‘yun. Hindi kayo pwede umalis ng sinehan kapag hindi ninyo napapanood ang umpisa o ang dulo o ang gitna. Kaya ang excellence na ina-achieve namin dito ay sa production value, sa technical aspects, sa storytelling, siyempre sa aming mga direktor na magagaling at siyempre, sa design, pati sa mga artista,” Regal Entertainment Inc. President and CEO, Ms. Roselle Monteverde on creating the newest Shake Rattle & Roll movie.
