SOUTHPAW (2015) Review

“A fighter knows only one way to work” Billy Hope, Southpaw

A family sport drama that features the talent of Jake Gyllenhaal and his dedication to his work from being skinny (Nightcrawler) to brawny. Southpaw doesn’t bring anything new to the genre but it does give some genuine feel of a boxing match. The film highlights Jake Gyllenhaal’s dramatic range and his skills in the sports of boxing.

Director Antoine Fuqua’s works mostly has obvious plot holes but it didn’t matter that much as he directs his films with a heart. The film has enough drama that hits and ends with a suspenseful main event that punches strong.

Southpaw is now showing in Philippine cinemas nationwide. Rated R-13 by the MTRCB.
