The Mummy will attempt to get Universal Pictures’ rebooted monster movie universe fully up and running when it opens in theaters in 2017. Starring Tom Cruise as a modern-day ex-Navy SEAL who crosses paths with a resurrected Egyptian queen played by Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), the Mummy reboot is being directed by Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness co-writer/producer Alex Kurtzman.
Previously-released Mummy set photos show Cruise and his costar Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders) filming scenes for the movie in Oxford, England, and the official Mummy synopsis released since then confirmed that a good chunk of the film’s action will take place in and around London, in particular. Additional photos from The Mummy‘s production in Central London have now leaked online, providing the first look at Boutella in her costume as the eponymous monster.
Just Jared posted the latest images from the Mummy set, showing Boutella in ghoulish makeup, largely dressed in proper mummy wrapping and performing in front of a fan to make her hair and loose bandages fly wild. The sequence being filmed here is clearly of the dramatic variety, as the photos also show a number of extras and stunt performers flinging themselves about and dodging for cover as Boutella’s Mummy uses her supernatural powers – abilities that will no doubt look more impressive after post-production, of course. Other members of the Mummy cast who have yet to be spotted in unofficial photos leaked from the set include Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story), and Russell Crowe as the film’s version of Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. Meanwhile, the script for The Mummy was co-written by Jon Spaihts: the screenwriter who penned the early draft of the Prometheus screenplay (known as Alien: Engineers) and worked on the script for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Doctor Strange movie.
The Mummy will open in U.S. theaters on June 2017, followed by Untitled Universal Monster Franchise Films on April 2018 and February 2019.
