SPLIT (2017) Review
Directed by M. Night Shyamalan
Shyamalan may have done some terrible movies in his filmography but one can’t deny the best ones he had done were terrific and makes his bad films forgivable. But where does his latest thriller Split falls into? Let’s just say it isn’t his best but it’s a damn good one.
Firstly, the film wouldn’t be as effective as it can be without James McAvoy. While you may imagine the role who has multiple characters being done by other artists, McAvoy is just wonderful and scary to see,it feels like director M. Night Shyamalan is enjoying once again what he is doing as the writer and director of the film.
Split feels claustrophobic at times, having most of its characters be in a basement, no sign of a way out and that makes the film an even more exciting and scary experience, apart from McAvoy’s terrific performance, the script is decent and can still surprise you. Some sequences may make you cringe for the decisions of its characters but that’s part of the fun in watching it.
It’s not as intense as last year’s Don’t Breathe but Split definitely has its own ways on being a powerful story worth seeing. It’s a crazy one and McAvoy and Shyamalan together works.
