“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2” Review: Marvel’s Early Father’s Day Presentation

p style=”text-align:center;”>MARVEL’S GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2 (2017) Review
Directed by James Gunn

One of Marvel’s breakout film, from being unknown to being the talk of the town, Guardians of the Galaxy gave one of the best cinema experience I’ve ever had when it opened last 2014. And boy, making its sequel an instant movie-to-look-forward to film.

The thing is, sequels will always be tricky to make. There’s always the challenge of topping something its predecessor had done, and with Guardians of the Galaxy, it really was hard to top something that epic. From the story, the acting, to the visuals, 2013’s Guardians of the Galaxy changed the game for superhero and space epic movies.

Writer and director James Gunn returns to helm one of the most emotional superhero film today. But that is not stopping him to also make the film as fun as the first one. But the downside is, this sequel is lacking meat in the story.

You see, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is vibrant, it’s full of life and color, and it’s fun and all, but you somehow feel that there’s something missing. And it tried to fill those in the end, but it’s a bit too late.

The overall effect of the film almost relies on its emotional punch in the end, and it’s big and heartbreaking. There’s something distinct about it, so you’ll feel happy and sad at the same time after watching it.

It’s confusing but it’s satisfying and lacking at the same time. What you expect and want from it visually including the action sequences, it has plenty to offer, it’s just the film has more than enough time to please the audience with those glorious epic space action sequences that feels flat. And then leave you weeping with its ending.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will give you the best entertainment a superhero movie could offer, it has clever jokes, space action spectacle, a bittersweet conclusion and lots of surprises. This may not be the meatiest Marvel movie ever made, but it delivers the fun and packs an emotional punch in the end.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2” is now showing in Philippine cinemas nationwide from Walt Disney Pictures, locally distributed by Columbia Pictures. Rated PG by the MTRCB.
