As part of the 2nd TOFARM Film Festival’s line-up, HIGH TIDE, a film written and directed by award-winning film editor Tara Illenberger, will be screened at select cinemas from July 12 – 28.
HIGH TIDE is a drama-adventure film about how the rising sea level and erratic tide schedule affects the people residing near the coastal, whose livelihood depends on it. This is a story of family and friendship portrayed by three children living against their harsh environment caused by climate change. The film aims to shed light on the reality of climate change and how it is an existing threat to all of us that we have continued to overlook.
“Many people try to deny Climate Change exists. But it does and it poses a clear and present threat to our archipelago… I think every Filipino can relate to this story because we have survived so many climate-related disasters in recent years.
This is a part of my personal advocacy, and is the second installment to my “Treelogy”, a three part series of films related to our environment. The first part was my debut film “Brutus” (Special Jury Prize, Cinemalaya 2008) which tackled deforestation and the plight of our Indigenous brothers.” –Tara Illenberger, Director
The film was shot entirely in Iloilo, hometown of Director Tara Illenberger, and casted Ilonggo actor and actress such as Arthur Solinap and Sunshine Teodoro, and casted local kids from Iloilo with little to no acting experience to play the main characters. The only non-Ilonggo cast is Dalin Sarmiento who is from Manila and undergone Hiligaynon language workshop for the role.
The film is co-presented by the Forest Foundation of the Philippines which is a non governmental organization that has been providing assistance to projects that aim to conserve, maintain and restore tropical forests in the Philippines. For the past years since 2005, it has already successfully supported a total of 383 projects.
High Tide is one of the films to add to the growing number of films hailing from the region. Surely, Ilonggo cinema is one to look forward to.
