‘Choosing’: A coming-of-gay story presented by real-life couple Ice Seguerra and Liza Diño-Seguerra

We all have our different coming-of-age stories but coming out coming-of-age stories are more complex because their identities aren’t as clear as what we normally grow up to and personally, I think coming out is something that’s constant because there’s just always something new you find in yourself.

But with Choosing, real-life couple Ice Seguerra and Liza Diño-Seguerra, as Mich and Stella, takes us in their safe space – a personal look at how they have journeyed in life most especially their experiences as part of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum.

Choosing is a fun, educational, insightful and at times heartbreaking story of two people who have gone through exploring their identities in a time when the world is not as welcoming of the idea of a person who’s not a boy nor a girl. There are struggles within the community that’s really relatable in Choosing not just for those who are part of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum but even the straight people. We all go through that phase when we don’t know who we really are and is afraid of exploring things because the society tells us to be something we’re not.

While tackling these issues about one’s identity or orientation, which the show actually has some informative way to discuss it, Choosing also tells how personal experiences create who we are as a person.

It’s a two-person show but the story is rich and at times uncomfortable. Uncomfortable because as it wants to tell the truth about its characters, it needs to also share the deep dark scenarios of what a gay person would experience.

Ice and Liza were way too real while performing as Mich and Stella. There are times you would question yourself if this is the coming of age and coming out stories of the two in real life. But only they can answer that. But that’s thing, there’s truth in their acting. They don’t need much props or other actors to tell their stories because what they present is the truth in their hearts and that’s enough.

The last story arc might need some trimming but at the end of the show, when the lights turn on, you look around and think that maybe you could be more understanding to the people around you. Choosing made me feel like I want to be a better person by treating others better whether they are straight or not.
