MICKEY 17 (2025) Review
Directed by Bong Joon-ho
Director Bong Joon-ho crafts an entertaining sociopolitical movie. The film feels like a combination of his films, particularly Snowpiercer and Okja—the minorities standing up and making an environmental statement. But what’s great is that Bong Joon-ho is a master at telling big stories; even those that look intimate feel big.
Robert Pattinson surprises with every turn of his character. Mickey 17, as a film, surprises its audience with every turn. Like other Bong Jon-hoo films, you are bewitched by how its story gets your full attention even if the treatment is sometimes uneven. Pattinson makes the movie experience even exciting with his performance.
The film gives the audience a one-of-a-kind movie experience. The film has a crazy third act in a very Bong Jon-joo kind of way. Entertaining, with a lot going on, but you’re still glued to every scene. Not only Pattinson is great in here, but the whole ensemble builds the film’s unconventional story through their performances.
This is the genre that Bong Joon-ho is an expert at. A chaotic sci-fi that lets you in on its story. You may be questioning yourself at times if you’re understanding the story right, but the little details matter and the payoff is satisfying.
