Yellow Walls and Flickering Lights: Breakout Philippines Brings The ‘Backrooms’ Nightmare To Life

If you’re up for a challenge and maybe in the mood to go beyond your comfort zone, Breakout Philippines brings to life the digital nightmare called Backrooms. This is in partnership with A24 and CreaZion Studios, in time for the Philippine release of the film adaptation, directed by Kane Parsons, the teenager who created the original viral YouTube videos. Right inside Shangri-La Plaza in Mandaluyong, they’ve built an immersive escape room that offers a brief, terrifying glimpse into the liminal void.

Gather your crew, because stepping through this doorway changes a standard mall day into something unforgettable.

Stepping Out of Reality

The transition is jarring. One moment you are walking past the bright, modern storefronts and fragrant coffee shops of Shangri-La Mall. The next, you step across a threshold and “no-clip” entirely out of the real world.

Breakout has recreated the atmosphere with unsettling accuracy. Suddenly, you are surrounded by sickly, repeating yellow wallpaper, the faint smell of damp carpets, and the relentless, low-frequency hum of fluorescent lights that seems to vibrate right in your chest. There are no cheap jump-scares or actors chasing you. Instead, the terror is purely psychological. The hallways defy logic, wrapping around in ways that make you feel utterly isolated—trapping you inside the exact, heavy dread of the upcoming film.

A Shared Survival: The Ultimate Test for Your Crew

This isn’t a space meant to be navigated alone. With a strict 20-minute clock ticking down, survival becomes a beautiful exercise in teamwork. The physical layout is intentionally disorienting, forcing your group to quickly find a rhythm. You’ll find yourselves splitting up to scan empty corners, shouting clues across the yellow abyss, and relying completely on each other’s instincts. There is a strange, bonding magic in sharing a collective panic, making it the ultimate weekend experience for a group of close friends.

A Workout for the Mind (Where Overthinking is the Enemy)

The puzzles scattered throughout the maze are a fantastic workout for your brain, designed to test your logic and observation under pressure. However, the environment plays tricks on your mind. Because the lights flicker and the atmosphere is heavy, it is incredibly easy to overcomplicate the simplest clues. Staring too hard at a wall or assuming a basic puzzle is a grand riddle will cost you precious minutes. The secret to escaping the Backrooms is keeping a cool head and trusting simple logic when everything around you feels chaotic.

Fueling the Hype for the Big Screen

By the time you return to the real world, your perspective shifts. Experiencing the unsettling weight of the Backrooms firsthand changes you from a passive viewer into someone who has felt the maze. It serves as the perfect, immersive prologue to the movie, leaving you entirely hyped and impatient to see how this digital nightmare unfolds on the big screen.

An Experience Worth Sharing

Whether you manage to escape or the clock runs out, the moment you push open the final door, the adrenaline rush gives way to laughter. Stepping back into the bustling, normal routine of the mall feels surreal. You’ll spend the rest of the day over lunch or coffee talking over one another—recounting who panicked when the lights dimmed, who solved the clutch puzzle at the last second, and how it felt to lose your sense of direction. It leaves you with a shared story that lingers long after you’ve left the mall.
