BLACK MASS (2015) Review
Directed by Scott Cooper

This is not your usual family-friendly film Johnny Depp and that’s good. Black Mass is gritty, a slowly developed, well-told crime drama with riveting performances from the cast. This is Depp back to serious acting. He’s pretty much the best reason you need to see the film as he’s not just different, there’s that grim looking face the film needs to make everything believable. And though it might be dull at times, the film has that authentic feel of a crime drama, of the realistic view of mobsters.

The film’s core strength is how it tells the story of Whitey Bulger and everything around him, the politics, family and friendship. It’s not your usual and at times entertaining crime drama film, the violence is resolute and you can see the consequences of their actions. And though numerous established actors are part of the film, all of them mattered, even if their screen time is less than a half of the whole film.
