MIDNIGHT IN A PERFECT WORLD (2020) Review
Directed by Dodo Dayao
Building up an eerie atmosphere makes a horror movie effective already. Because it makes you anticipate something terrifying even if there’s really nothing to anticipate about. That makes Dodo Dayao’s sophomore feature Midnight in a Perfect World one of the best movie experiences in recent memory.
There’s something distinct about the film. It doesn’t use the usual formula for its genre, its narrative will leave you at times puzzled and amazed, and maybe both at the same time. It’s a lavish and engrossing horror, one that we don’t see often in Philippine cinema.
You can see and feel Dodo Dayao in full control of the film. From the atmosphere, to mounting the drama, the tension and the horrors, there’s sophistication in every detail. It’s smart, well-acted and well-directed.
I love how the film can be thought-provoking, political and entertaining all at the same time. Leaving you thinking and with lots of emotions after watching, making it more worthy of your time and money.
