‘Barbie’ Review: Clever, thought-provoking and wildly entertaining

BARBIE (2023) Review
Directed by Greta Gerwig

Who would have thought that a movie about the Barbie doll would tackle existential crisis? And not just for Barbie herself but also for its audience.

Barbie is clever, thought-provoking and wildly entertaining. The way the film stimulates the mind with its themes and at the same time entertains makes Barbie more than just a big movie with big names. It really wanted to present a story that goes beyond amusement. Something that will leave you thinking more about life.

Realizing the world is not as perfect as it may seem which makes Barbie’s journey, in a way, a coming-of-age movie, is really an emotional ride. It’s weird to realize that the film is relatable in so many ways. And not just with the character of Barbie, but also with Ken. Yes, both of them.

I was mesmerized at how Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach wrote the story and how smart the screenplay is. It has gone to several situations and choices that I didn’t expect but they’re still within the plausibility of its characters. Gerwig manages to create something that’s off-and-on brand of Barbie. But you’ll realize that it is something that those character needed to have life on the screen. The direction of the story, the characters and its actors is just perfect. It feels as if Barbie really did come to life and began a journey of self-discovery.

Margot Robbie is just the perfect Barbie. At first, I thought she’s a bit older than what I would imagine Barbie to be, but her looks, the way she personified her character is just flawless that even a sad and crying Barbie is still beautiful, still looking like a doll.

I enjoyed the movie A LOT. I was smiling the whole time. Ryan Gosling was a scene stealer and America Ferrera added more soul to its story. What I saw was not the Barbie story I was expecting but it definitely feels like the Barbie story I needed.
