GUILTY PLEASURE (2024) Review
Directed by Connie S. A. Macatuno
What I like most about Guilty Pleasure is that you’ll feel the story is complete from start to finish even when the filming has began, like the characters are consistent with their motives and even with its non-linear storytelling, you’ll get what the film wants to tell.
There’s never a dull moment, I even enjoyed the court scenes because the conflicts were well-established. ‘Guilty Pleasure’ is Lovi Poe at her best, Jameson Blake at his sexiest and JM de Guzman at his cunningest. The three stars complement the story of Noreen Capili which is impressively written. Director Connie Macatuno manages to bring out the best of her actors whether it’s a heavy or light scene.
I would like to add though, the intimate or sexy scenes could have been steamier and the editing is at times awkward as some of the transitions feel abrupt. But these issues don’t affect the film’s storytelling in a big way.
The film, while being a court drama and a crime drama, is quite entertaining. The film drops its background story and conflicts in a way that adds intrigue and anticipation for what will happen next.
What’s also worth mentioning is how the character of Lovi Poe, Alexis, redeems herself from an abusive and unfair relationship and also finds someone that deserves her character more. The court drama and the real life drama present that perception means everything in winning the rule of law but it doesn’t mean it recognizes all sides of the story.
It may feel a bit too fantasy to have her story be told in a fairy-tale like revenge but the film leaves its audience with satisfaction in how the characters ended.
