‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ Review: The Best One Yet

INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER (2026) Review
Directed by Jacob Chase

Honestly, there has been a decline in quality in the Insidious franchise since director James Wan left. But the concept of “The Further” really has a lot of potential, if only the stories built around it weren’t generic and made as if they were rushed. That’s why featuring new characters and a different storyline got me a bit excited, hopeful that maybe, just maybe, this one would turn out better than its predecessors. Seeing fresh faces gave me confidence that the filmmakers were finally willing to try something new instead of relying on the same old formula.

It’s a welcome addition and the right direction for future Insidious movies. The story, the characters, and the perspective are fresh, giving us a completely different lens through which to experience the supernatural. Instead of retreading the same household hauntings, it explores new corners of this universe and makes the threat feel unpredictable again.

There are impressive twists here. I was a little surprised, but the twists were within the world it built, so they didn’t feel forced. Everything that happens makes sense based on the rules established earlier in the film. Rather than relying on cheap shock value, the reveals actually reward you for paying attention to the plot.

One of the weaknesses of the franchise is overexplaining things in an uninspired way. Too-detailed monologues about how the dark realm functions strip away the fear, and watching characters overplan their next move makes the pacing feel tedious. This movie still suffers from those issues, but there are enough genuine scares, solid atmospheric build-up, and tension to keep you hooked.

It feels like writer and director Jacob Chase knows the ins and outs of the Insidious franchise. He built a well-told story that lets audiences appreciate “The Further” more than previous installments did. By balancing genuine suspense with solid character work, he proves that there is still plenty of room for this franchise to grow if it stays in the right hands.

Insidious: Out of the Further shows what can happen when a director actually respects the potential of the lore instead of just rushing out another sequel. It fixes enough of the franchise’s lingering issues to stand on its own feet and gives us a genuinely creepy ride along the way. If this is the new standard going forward, the future of the series looks surprisingly bright.
