More Than a Rom-Com: Regal Entertainment Inc.’s ‘Project Baby’ Takes on Big Real-Life Questions

On the surface, Regal Entertainment Inc.’s newest romantic comedy movie, ‘Project Baby,’ looks like your classic, feel-good movie about two people with totally different views on love and family. But if you look a little closer, you’ll find it runs much deeper than your typical rom-com. The film features the versatile Sue Ramirez and OPM rock icon Rico Blanco in his first leading man role on the big screen. Together, their unexpected but undeniable chemistry anchors a refreshing story that dives straight into the headspace of a modern, independent woman taking charge of her own destiny.

Director Eric Quizon points out that the movie naturally brings up the exact questions so many people are asking themselves today. “I think it (Project Baby) raises a lot of questions kasi nga, right now, people think when are they going to get married? Or whether they are going to live with each other or have a baby. May mga questions na ganoon. So, it may seem tough na ‘yung topic mo medyo may parang mahirap isipin, or ayaw mo isipin kung makakarating ka doon, somehow this movie tackles that. We want to treat it as light as possible,” Quizon describes their film to the media.

Lead star Sue Ramirez echoes this sentiment, explaining that the movie is a great conversation starter for women. “This focuses on conversations na nagpalawak lalo sa mga choices ng mga kababaihan. So, it’s not only a romcom. You’re not only going to watch this to have fun, but also to widen ‘yung pang-unawa natin sa mga choices na pwedeng gawin ng mga kababaihan,” Ramirez adds.

While on the surface, Regal Entertainment Inc.’s newest romantic comedy film presents itself as two individuals who have different perspectives on relationships and building a family, which leads to a heartwarming and fun journey visually, ‘Project Baby’ is more than that.

The film takes us from the perspective of a modern woman, independent and progressive. Someone who doesn’t need a man or another person to give her what she wants. Someone who takes charge and says what’s on her mind.

Project Baby (directed by Eric Quizon and written by Joey Javier Reyes) follows Sandy (Sue Ramirez), a successful 30-something who started her own ad agency. Sandy is a total planner who worked her butt off for everything she has. But there’s just one thing missing: she really wants a kid, and she feels like her biological clock is ticking. True to form, she’s determined to make it happen on her own terms. So, on her birthday, she officially kicks off “Project Baby”—her step-by-step game plan to become a mom.

What are the insights about parenthood that you discovered while making ‘Project Baby’?

I know it’s going to be too controversial when you say it like that, pero kasi kawawa talaga ‘yung bata. Ano ipapakain mo? Ano ipandadamit mo? So, ‘yun ‘yung pinaka-malaking realization ko.

But with all these issues, does Sue still want to be a mom?

“I do, I do, definitely,” Sue answers confidently.

Of course, there are several options that you can do, pero most women, especially in the Philippines because we live in a predominantly Catholic country, ang nangyayari, we keep the baby. Siyempre, other people lumalabas ‘yung instinct ng pagkananay, but once the baby’s there, they don’t know what to do.

“I’m still kind of trying to search for answers regarding that, but I also know that a lot of it also depends on the things around you – the situation you surround yourself in, the people you meet, do you have a partner, where are you in life. So, I think ‘yung pulot ko dito sa Project na ‘to and sa discussion today, is parang this movie is, yes it’s about having a baby, but it’s also to me, about the opposing forcing all the time of taking control on the one hand and also of letting life happen to you. Sometimes, it’s a good thing to take control, sometimes it’s a good thing to let life happen to you, sometimes there’s a thin line where you have to take control din.

Nagkaroon din ng justification pagiging lalaki namin,” Alex Calleja adds to the discussion.
