UNTOLD (2025) Review
Directed by Derick Cabrido
It’s not just her eyes or her movements, it’s her whole body that’s acting as Vivian Vera. Jodi Sta Maria gives a masterclass in acting, portraying a person with a lot of baggage, mentally and emotionally, who will also face challenges physically. That’s a lot, and the character needs someone who can transcend that pain and misery to the audience. Jodi did that. You can definitely see and feel that she’s a smart actress and that she can transform to more even more challenging characters.
While the film struggles because of its non-linear storytelling, it has its pros with the structure it chose. The film’s strength is how it presents its story in a way that the audience will have second thoughts about what they see on the screen, because not everything is what it seems to be. Is what we see visually true? Or is it just all in the head of Vivian?
It’s more than just the scares, Untold gets to be a cautionary tale for fake news peddlers, especially those who go to extreme measures just for clout. But the film did present a justifiable decision for its main character. Still bad, but personally, for Vivian, she saw no other way. Unluckily for her, her choices led to a series of unfortunate events.
Untold is a timely reminder not just for journalists or those in the same industry, but it’s for everyone. For every person who is clinging to a knife, know that every decision matters. Jodi Sta. Maria adds another memorable character to her filmography. But it’s not a character we hope we can relate to.
